Making sure your voice is heard in Cabarrus County starts with registering to vote. Here’s everything you need to know to get registered ahead of the upcoming election.

How to Register
New voter registrations can be submitted one of three ways:
- By Mail: Cabarrus County Board of Elections, PO Box 1315, Concord, NC 28026-1315
- In Person: Cabarrus County Board of Elections, 369 Church Street N, Concord, NC
- Online: You can also register through the North Carolina DMV via this link.
Registration Deadline
The deadline to register to vote in North Carolina is 25 days before Election Day, at 5:00 PM.
Forms delivered to the Cabarrus County Board of Elections office or postmarked by the deadline will be accepted as valid for the upcoming election. Voter registration transactions completed through the DMV or other approved agencies by the deadline are also accepted.
Once registered, the Cabarrus County Board of Elections will notify you of your assigned precinct and polling place.
North Carolina requires voters to present a valid photo ID when voting in person. Here’s what you need to know to make sure your vote counts.
Don’t Have a Photo ID?
If you don’t currently have a valid photo ID, you can obtain one from the Cabarrus County Board of Elections any time before the election, through the end of the early voting period.
Voting Without an ID on Election Day
If you arrive at the polls without a valid photo ID, you can still vote. Sign an affidavit of reasonable impediment (also known as a “Photo ID Exception Form”) explaining why you weren’t able to present ID. This form is also available if you have a religious objection to being photographed, or if you’ve been affected by a recently declared natural disaster.
Alternatively, you can vote without your ID on Election Day and then bring a valid photo ID to your county board of elections by noon on the third business day after the election.
Voting by Mail
If you’re voting by mail (absentee voting), you’ll need to include a photocopy of a valid photo ID with your returned ballot, unless you’re a military or overseas citizen voter. If you don’t have a photo ID, you can complete the Absentee Photo ID Exception Form included with your absentee ballot materials.

North Carolina makes it easy for eligible residents to register and vote in the same visit, but only during the early voting period.
How It Works
Residents may register to vote at any early voting site in their county during early voting, and cast their ballot immediately at that same site. Here’s what’s required:
Step 1: Attest to Your Eligibility
Same-day registrants must confirm their eligibility by:
- Completing a Voter Registration Application
- Signing the application
- Note: Knowingly providing false information on this form is a Class One Felony.
Step 2: Prove Your Residence
You’ll need to present one of the following documents, showing your current name and current address:
- NC driver’s license
- Any other government-issued photo ID (must show current name and address)
- A government document showing your name and address
- A current utility bill
- A bank statement
- A government check
- A paycheck
- A current college/university photo ID, paired with proof of campus housing
What Happens Next
Within two business days, the County Board of Elections verifies:
- Your driver’s license and Social Security number
- Your voter registration record
- Your address, by mail
- Whether any duplicate registrations exist
Once verified, your vote counts. Same-day registrants are only disqualified if the County Board of Elections determines they are not eligible to vote.
Early voting gives Cabarrus County residents the flexibility to cast their ballot in person on select days before Election Day, at any early voting site in the county, rather than being limited to your assigned precinct.
Every early voting site carries all ballot styles for the election, so you’re never turned away based on location.
Register and Vote at the Same Time
During the early voting period, you can register to vote and cast your ballot in the same visit, as long as you provide sufficient proof of name and address. You can also update your name or address at the site if needed.
Photo ID Required
Just like on Election Day, all voters at early voting sites will be asked to present a valid photo ID.

Can’t make it to the polls in person? Cabarrus County residents may vote absentee by mail.
Requesting Your Ballot
Every registered voter may request a ballot be mailed to them. Please note that a new absentee ballot request form must be submitted for every election; requests do not carry over.
Military and overseas voters have an added option under the federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA): ballots can be emailed directly to them.

Completed absentee ballots must be received by the Cabarrus County Board of Elections office by the deadline listed on the calendar link above.

On Election Day, registered voters must cast their ballot at their assigned precinct, unlike early voting, where you can vote at any early voting site in the county.

The Cabarrus County Board of Elections plays a unique and important role in our local government. It’s the only statutory, bipartisan, quasi-judicial, supervisory Board within North Carolina’s state government structure. It ensures elections in Cabarrus County are administered fairly and consistently for every voter.
By law, the Board is responsible for making and issuing the rules, regulations, and instructions needed to guide both election officials and voters, always in line with state law and the guidelines set by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
