North Carolina makes it easy for eligible residents to register and vote in the same visit, but only during the early voting period.
How It Works
Residents may register to vote at any early voting site in their county during early voting, and cast their ballot immediately at that same site. Here’s what’s required:
Step 1: Attest to Your Eligibility
Same-day registrants must confirm their eligibility by:
- Completing a Voter Registration Application
- Signing the application
- Note: Knowingly providing false information on this form is a Class One Felony.
Step 2: Prove Your Residence
You’ll need to present one of the following documents, showing your current name and current address:
- NC driver’s license
- Any other government-issued photo ID (must show current name and address)
- A government document showing your name and address
- A current utility bill
- A bank statement
- A government check
- A paycheck
- A current college/university photo ID, paired with proof of campus housing
What Happens Next
Within two business days, the County Board of Elections verifies:
- Your driver’s license and Social Security number
- Your voter registration record
- Your address, by mail
- Whether any duplicate registrations exist
Once verified, your vote counts. Same-day registrants are only disqualified if the County Board of Elections determines they are not eligible to vote.
